Why I Love Oregon State University

I started my college career in 1994 at Oregon State University. It was one of the greatest decisions I have made. The first thing that struck me when I arrived on campus was the history all around you. Old brick buildings, mature landscapes, and stories about them all was my first impression.

I moved into Finley Hall and met some guys that would become the greatest group of friends I have ever had. Even now, ten years later, and scattered around the west coast, we are still great friends and keep in touch.
Oregon State University had a great selection of academic majors and facilities, and a long and storied sports history. I remember a blur of basketball, baseball, football, and volleyball games. Endless workouts at Dixon Recreation Center. Bowling at the Oregon State University Memorial Union and greasy burgers behind the dorm.

Sporting events were always my favorite things to go to. I remember getting blind-sided by a cup of beer at a Civil War game by some miserable Ducks fans, sub-human lifeforms that they are. :)
My favorite memories (most of which only my closest Oregon State University friends, aka "The Herd," will understand:
Ryan yelling, "Look at my shoes!" as he walks into the bowling alley. Bother the hell out of Reggie the Residence Director, who was unfortunate enough to have two 15" speakers, who were owned by a huge Ice Cube fan, located approximately ten feet directly above his bed. "Indy," the geeky Resident Assistant who wore a path between his room and mine so he could yell at me about the music. Lou being body slammed against his door by Ryan after practicing his fastball against Ryan's door. Reciting Disney's Robin Hood from underneath my bed while using a smelly tennis shoe as a pillow because I tried Jack Daniel's for the first time (me and "Uncle Jack" haven't spoken since). Finally, who could forget, "Ehhhhh, Tarik!"

Yeah, Finley! I'm with you bro. Great memories for me too, even though long ago in my case (circa 1976). Finley and Bloss were the two new gems back then. How things have changed!

I'm in the same Finley Hall era as the first comment person and might have known him (her?). Rodger was the resident director and was a real pain in the neck, but that's another story. In a nutshell, he hated me because of my giant speaker cabinets that he claimed shook the things on his shelves in his ground floor apt. (I was on the sixth floor!).

Anyway - and I'm not making this up - two days ago I was talking to this woman (maybe 20 years younger than me) at the east coast university where we both work, and I mentioned that I went to OSU. She immediately said, "I worked there!" I asked her what she did at OSU and she said "Resident Hall Director." So I asked her which dorm and she said, "Finley." I about fell over! Talk about a small world! She inhabited the same apt. of the dreaded Rodger for two years! She said when she moved in the dorm was really run down, but she help convince the college to rehab it. Wow -when I went to OSU, Finley was considered a close second to Bloss as far as the two best dorms on campus! Plus speaking of Bloss, she met and married the RHD from that dorm. These are all great memories - thanks for the post!
